INDIAN SEMOLINA SNACK (SOOJI UPMA)Semolina is used in variety of dishes in the world. Enjoy this easy and quick VegRasoi Indian Semolina Snack (Sooji Upma), a popular everyday snack other than vermicelli, cracked wheat etc.

Serves: 2 Cooking Time: ~25 minutes



½ cup semolina (sooji / rava)

2 tbsp oil

¼ tsp black mustard seeds (sarson)

2 tsp curry leaves (optional)

2-3 green cayenne pepper (diced) (optional)

1 small onion (diced)

½ tsp salt

1 cup water

Fresh cilantro / coriander (to garnish) (optional)


Take a pan and heat the oil into this. Now add the mustard seeds and heat this till it sizzles. Stir the curry leaves and cayenne pepper. Additionally saute the onions for ~2-3 minutes until golden brown. Add the semolina, salt to taste and cook on medium heat for ~10-12 minutes until it is light brown. Finally pour water into the semolina and stir. Cover the pan and cook this on low heat for another ~4-5 minutes or until the water has been soaked fully. Remove the lid and stir well. Add more water if required or until semolina is soft and gooey! Garnish the Indian Semolina Snack with fresh cilantro.

Suggested Food Pairing: Use this as a healthy snack anytime with your choice of beverage.


  1. The semolina is cooked well once the water is soaked fully and if it does not stick to the pan.
  2. Saute carrot, boiled cauliflower florets or peas, after the semolina is cooked light brown and before the water is added to make a great Indian semolina snack (pulav).
  3. Saute cashews or peanuts to light brown after the mustard seeds sizzle and before you stir the curry leaves for nutty flavor!
